North Carolinians recycle 85.4 pounds of materials a second. But we throw away more than 752 pounds of trash in the same amount of time. At Noah's Landing, we're setting our sights on reducing that gap. In 2009, we're "going green for the globe" and setting a goal to bring more recycling awareness to Harnett County.
Why? Put simply, saving our environment isn't just a cool green thing to do, it's critical for our survival and the survival of the animals we try to protect. Across the state, for instance, landfills are filling fast, often leading to groundwater contamination and methane gas emmissions. Trash that we toss on the ground can wind up choking animals who stumble across it, or leading to starvation when an animal accidentally eats a product like Styrofoam.
Plus, it just makes sense. Keeping our environment cleaner - and greener - will lead to a better quality of life for us and the animals in our ecosystem.
Join us in 2009 as we try to generate more awareness about recycling in our community. You'll see this new theme across our programs. Classes who visit on field trips will receive special "REUSE IT!" bookmarks made from recycled paper. We're adding new recycling stations to the farm, including places to drop off used cell phones. We're even coming up with ways for kids to make crafts for their parents using household items at our upcoming Mother's Day event. And this spring, we're sponsoring an essay contest to help kids earn "Zoo Bucks" toward Junior Zookeeper camp, a birthday party, or admission to Noah's Landing.
